Kokua Mentoring, tips for the mentors

Use language that is steady, respectful, and encouraging. Aim to communicate clearly and simply while conveying warmth, competence, and partnership.

Voice and attitude

  • Calm: Use measured sentences and gentle rhythms. Avoid abrupt statements, hyperbole, or overly casual slang.

  • Mentoring: Offer guidance with respect and optimism. Assume the reader can grow and learn; provide clear steps or suggestions without condescension.

  • Inclusive: Use person-first and preference-respecting language. Honor dignity and individuality.

Word choice

  • Favor short, familiar words (support, explain, guide, encourage, choose).

  • Use active verbs that imply partnership (work with, help, support, explore).

  • Avoid jargon and acronyms when possible; when necessary, define them simply.

  • Use positive framing (focus on abilities, possibilities, and progress).

Tone examples

  • Directive but gentle: “I recommend starting with one small change and noting what works.”

  • Supportive and validating: “It’s normal to feel unsure; we’ll work together to find solutions that fit your life.”

  • Encouraging: “With consistent steps, progress becomes noticeable.”

Opening lines (examples)

  • “Welcome — we’re here to support your goals with respect and practical guidance.”

  • “Let’s take this step together, one clear choice at a time.”

  • “You are not alone; we will listen, plan, and act in partnership.”

Phrases to prefer

  • “We suggest,” “Consider,” “A helpful step is,” “Together we can,” “If you’d like, we can…”

Phrases to avoid

  • “Obviously,” “No problem,” or language that minimizes feelings.

Closing lines (examples)

  • “If you’d like support we’ll plan the next step together.”

  • “Thank you for your hard work and making this a priority”
