Kokua Mentoring, tips for the mentors
Use language that is steady, respectful, and encouraging. Aim to communicate clearly and simply while conveying warmth, competence, and partnership.
Voice and attitude
Calm: Use measured sentences and gentle rhythms. Avoid abrupt statements, hyperbole, or overly casual slang.
Mentoring: Offer guidance with respect and optimism. Assume the reader can grow and learn; provide clear steps or suggestions without condescension.
Inclusive: Use person-first and preference-respecting language. Honor dignity and individuality.
Word choice
Favor short, familiar words (support, explain, guide, encourage, choose).
Use active verbs that imply partnership (work with, help, support, explore).
Avoid jargon and acronyms when possible; when necessary, define them simply.
Use positive framing (focus on abilities, possibilities, and progress).
Tone examples
Directive but gentle: “I recommend starting with one small change and noting what works.”
Supportive and validating: “It’s normal to feel unsure; we’ll work together to find solutions that fit your life.”
Encouraging: “With consistent steps, progress becomes noticeable.”
